There are 8 classifications you can divide essential oils into - Citrus, Florals, Woods, Leaves, Herbs, Spices, Roots and Resins. Understanding these classifications can help you identify general attributes and characteristics of the oils. Within classiications oils can have common characteristics, although each oil individually has far more specific and unique properties.

Let's focus on the floral category in this post. Floral (flower) oils are distilled from the petals or aerial parts of the plant.

Floral oils are calming, harmonizing, light and love filled. The common properties that the floral oils share include emotional benefits as well as benefits to the skin and hair. Below are a few of the floral oils and their properties.

Rose

Rose is one of the most precious and sought-after essential oils in the world. Roses have been adored for thousands of years, symbolic of love, beauty, and seduction.

It takes 10,000 rose blossoms to produce just 5 mL of Rose essential oil. But just a drop of Rose essential oil delivers a beautiful fragrance that soothes away stress and uplifts mood.

Lavender

Sourced from France + Bulgaria … this is the swiss army knife of essential oils! It's extremely versatile with over 100 uses.

Lavender helps ease feelings of anxiousness and can be particularly calming during times of stress. It evokes feelings of self-awareness and relaxation.

Geranium

The Ancient Egyptians were on to something when they used the Geranium flower as a beautifying agent. The Geranium plant is very versatile ranging in purpose of relieving feelings of stress to acting as a moisturizer for skin hydration and balance.

Use on both dry and oily hair to retain oil balance. Geranium can even be applied to underarms to act as a natural deodorant. Sounds like one to add to the beauty routine for sure!

Roman Chamomile

Sweet, floral, and herbaceous, the aroma of Roman Chamomile is soothing. You can diffuse it, apply it to pulse points, and inhale it from the hands to aid feelings of serenity and calm.

Did you know ancient Roman soldiers used Roman Chamomile for courage during times of war? Who couldn’t use a little boost in the bravery department every once in a while?

  • Aiding mood in times of stress and shock

Ylang Ylang

Ylang Ylang oil helps to lessen tension and stress and to promote a positive outlook. Ylang Ylang oil is frequently used in luxurious hair and skin products for its scent and nourishing and protective properties.

Ylang Ylang can be used aromatically, topically, and internally. Diffuse Ylang Ylang in the evenings to help you wind down.

  • Add a drop of Ylang Ylang to a warm bath with Epsom salts.

  • Brush a drop or two of Ylang Ylang through your hair.

  • Make a personalized fragrance using Ylang Ylang and any other oils you want to include and applying it to your wrists and neck.
